Level 3 Social Science

SOSC3
Course Description Recommended Prior Learning Open Entry. Keen learners can pick this option up at Level 3.
This course will be developed in conjunction with the learners and may include any combination of Economics, Geography, Tourism and History standards depending on the interests of the class and individuals. It will be based on local, national and international topics and be a combination of external and internal assessment. In Level 1 Geography the main skill is to ‘describe’ Geographic topics and issues; in Level 2, it is to ‘explain’; Level 3 moves learners to the higher thinking skills of ‘analysis’. This course builds on all the skills, ideas and concepts from the Level 1 & 2 courses. We study and analyse the tourism process, a specific natural environment, further develop research and analysis skills and look at contemporary issues. Geography has a broad application. It develops skills and knowledge relating to environmental management, planning, Resource Management, tourism and other service industries. It can be studied either as a science or as an arts subject at university. History standards focus on historical influences across a period of time. There are no set contexts and the topics studied can be developed to reflect learner interest. A research Achievement Standard allows for personal research. Learners chose to do a combination of Geography, Tourism and History standards in consultation with their teacher.
